At the time of Elizabeth Shutters founding, the term "Inland Empire" would only have been considered half right; and the bumper sticker "Where the heck is Cucamonga?" was a cultural icon. Since then, in San Bernardino County, from Upland, Rancho Cucamonga and Montclair in the West, south to Corona, Norco and Chino Hills and east to Redlands, San Bernardino, Riverside and Yucaipa, the Inland Empire has experienced explosive growth. Elizabeth Shutters' plant is in Colton, the middle of the Inland Empire, and naturally the company has participated in this growth. Elizabeth Shutters' 3 ½ inch louvers with oversized frames are the most popular product in the area. Elizabeth Shutters' management believes the company is the number one manufacturer of custom wood shutters for the Inland Empire.
Three years ago my family and I went to Elizabeth Shutters to see about buying shutters for our hotels. We were refurbishing existing properties and wanted everything upgraded. The shutters had to be attractive, durable and cheap. We were very concerned about upkeep and repair costs because guests can be hard on room furnishings and we can’t maintain them here.
We visited about a dozen shutter manufacturers to see what everyone had. Everyone but Elizabeth Shutters told us they could do the job as specified and gave us a quote. Elizabeth Shutters did not give us a quote. They sent us away saying that we would not be happy with the product we wanted because it would fail in our application. This did not bother me and I chose a small shutter manufacturer to build and install my shutters at a very good price. My brother decided to wait.
Two years later I wished I had listened to my brother. The shutters fell apart like Elizabeth Shutters predicted, they were very expensive to maintain, and that other company is out of the hotel business. They were a big mistake. Since then I paid Elizabeth Shutters to make shutters for my whole lobby and they are replacing the first ones. When I moved my private practice, I went to an older building with completely renovated office space but the windows were dated. As you can see from the before picture, the bottom half of the glass was frosted glass. The framework also presented a challenge in itself.
